WHO IS JONAS BURGOS?

JONAS BURGOS, is a farmer and activist. He is the son of the late press freedom hero Jose “Joe” Burgos and Edita Burgos. The Burgos family owns a farm in Bulacan, where Jonas is the resident farmer. He is married to MaryAnn and has a 3-year-old daughter named Yumi at the time of abduction.

Jonas was also an activist, serving as a community organizer and a member of the Kilusan ng Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (Farmer’s Movement of the Philippines).

On April 28, 2007, 36 year old Jonas was having lunch in a mall in Quezon City when six armed men and a woman, who identified themselves as police, forcibly took him, dragging him like a pig and forcing him into a vehicle. As he was being abducted, witnesses reported him shouting, “Aktibista lang po ako!” (I am just an activist!).

That was the last known whereabouts of Jonas. He did not appear at the family meeting scheduled to take place at their home that evening.
